Leon

My journey into education began through voluntary work on a football and literacy project in Oxford supporting disengaged young people. What started as a short-term opportunity quickly became a long-term vocation.

After working as a teaching assistant within a secondary school and nurture provision in Cornwall, I completed my PGCE and began my career as a primary school teacher. During this time, I developed a strong foundation in teaching Maths and English, alongside a particular interest in kinaesthetic learning influenced by my background in Physical Education.

I later moved into strategic leadership as the Sussex lead for Active Sussex, advising over 450 primary schools on PE and School Sport Premium funding, delivering training to teachers and supporting schools to raise standards and confidence in physical education.

Alongside my mainstream roles, I continued tutoring and became increasingly aware of how many capable young people were struggling—not because of academic ability, but because of unmet SEND and SEMH needs.

In 2017, I joined an alternative provision for 14–25-year-olds as GCSE and Functional Skills Maths Lead, later transitioning to lead English Language and work-based qualifications. Working therapeutically with young people who had experienced significant barriers to education reinforced my belief that psychological safety and trust are the foundations of meaningful learning.

Alongside my teaching career, I trained as a coach supporting young people at risk of becoming NEET and adults navigating similar challenges. These coaching principles now inform my tutoring practice, enabling me to bridge academic development with emotional and executive functioning support.

Today, I work closely with families, schools and local authorities, offering bespoke tutoring and coaching that prioritises safety, clarity and trust.

Outside of work, I enjoy surfing, supporting Coventry City Football Club, training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, going to gigs, and watching movies.

Testimonials

“Leon is an incredibly warm, patient person, and quickly built a close bond with my son, who has ADHD and had very low confidence in maths. Leon's sessions were personalised and full of fun, high-quality maths learning, with games, cards, counters and other props.”

— Sally, parent

“Leon is one of the most incredible people I have ever met! When I first met Leon I was confused about my life and where I was going to go next. He helped me find the right path. I now have a job that means the world to me and that I love going to everyday and Leon was the one who helped me to find that.”

— Bradley, student
